Theyyam
Theyyam is a very popular ritualistic dance form of North Malabar. There are over 400 varieties of Theyyams and it is performed from the month of November to April. Theyyam means Daivam or God. It is performed with traditional rituals and customs. The costumes used are colourful and the make up is done using natural colours. Theyyam begins with “ Varavili”( invoking the god or goddess). This is followed by the “ Thottam”( narration of the story). Villagers believe that their well being is based on the will and pleasure of the god or goddess. First part of every Theyyam is known as Vellattom which is performed without proper make up. The full make up with costumes and headgear reflects high sense of aesthetics.Theyyam Calendar >>
